April, 2023 – Water loss in Germany

A newly published paper shows that Germany lost about 760 million tons of water per year within the last 20 years. Scientists (including several GlobalCDA team members) used GRACE and GRACE-FollowOn satellite data to investigate the water loss.
The following figure shows the temporal variations of the total water storage over Germany, with the large seasonal variations (summer vs. winter) already removed. We can see that in particular the recend dry years affect the trend.

Press releases were published (in German) by the GFZ and the University of Bonn.

  • 22.10.2020: We are happy that the new paper of Deggim et al. (2021) is submitted and is currently under review for the journal ESSD. The paper is a joint effort of many GlobalCDA members and introduces two public GRACE level-3 correction data sets that may be useful for hydrology data assimilation, drought assessment, climate model validation, GIA inversion, etc.

July, 2020

  • 30.07.2020: The new paper of Müller-Schmied et al. (2021) is published describing the newest WaterGAP mode version 2.2d which is used by the GlobalCDA research unit.
